2006 Film Descriptions

Farming the Seas
55 min Directed by Steve Cowan and Barry Schienberg
Aquaculture was intended to take the pressure off ocean fish stocks and help avert a global food shortage, but many experts now believe that some forms of "fish farming" are actually creating more problems than they are solving … and time is running out. Farming the Seas is the sequel to the award-winning PBS Special Empty Ocean, Empty Nets. It explores what is at stake for all of us. As the aquaculture industry explodes across the globe, a growing number of communities and fisheries experts are engaged in an intense debate over its environmental, socio-economic, and health and food safety consequences.

Question and Answer with Anne Mosness
Anne fished for wild salmon for several decades on the Copper River, Bristol Bay and Puget Sound and has seen first hand the impacts of fish farming on wild fish prices and marketshare. After reading that suspected endrocrine disrupting chemicals were allowed in the production of farmed salmon, she developed the "Go Wild Campaign" to educate eaters, chefs, media and elected officials about the differences between farmed finfish carnivores and wild fish.

In 2001, the day her boat burned in Bristol Bay, she stepped into a new career as researcher on marine and fisheries issues with the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, and has worked with Public Citizen and other national organizations concerned with legislation that would allow fish farming to expand into ocean waters. She received a W.K. Kellogg Food and Society Policy Fellowship and has represented the fishing industry at a UN World Food Summit, Slow Foods Conference in Italy, and other global and national forums.

As president of the Women's Maritime Association, Anne worked for passage of safety measures thru Congress, and has brought an image of family fishing to interviews with CNN, Christian Science Monitor, New York Times, NBC, and other national and regional media. In the summer of 2006 she returned to Egegik as operations manager for Peter Pan Seafoods during the summer sockeye fishery.
